Esther G. Maynor Endowed Scholarship
Maynor scholarships can be awarded to incoming, first-year members of the Maynor Honors College. This scholarship will cover any unmet financial need (applied toward the cost of tuition, fees, room, and board) minus any other financial aid the student receives. A book stipend is also included. Added support for university health insurance can be requested, but must be made in writing following the awarding of the scholarship. To assess financial need, Maynor scholarship awardees need to submit an annual FAFSA application to the Office of Financial Aid. The scholarship is renewable for three additional years provided that financial need is maintained, the student remains in good academic standing at the university, and meets the requirements for continuation in the Honors College.
Born and raised in Robeson County, Esther Graham Maynor was the daughter of Duncan and Dovie Lowry Graham. She married Therod “Horse” Maynor. During WWII, Therod Maynor and Floyd Pike became friends and eventually business partners with Pike Electric in Mount Airy, NC. Pike Electric is the largest electrical contractor in the southeast. Therod passed away in 1967 and Mrs. Maynor stayed in Mount Airy. Upon Mrs. Maynor’s death, she left in her will that her Trust Estate, minus some specific distributions that she listed, be given to the Trustees of UNC Pembroke for the purpose of establishing the Esther G. Maynor Scholarship.
